Thanks For The Memories!

Well, it looks like the 2009 season has come to an end. Before we talk about each player's year, let's review a few highlights. The Friday Fivesome blog spot was begun in January and quickly announced that LT was the 2008 Player Of The Year and awarded the first ever Provisional Mulligan Cup. The preseason rankings came out and Karl was not only #1, but boasted of a possible undefeated season. However, after the first match of the year, Karl drooped to #5 and Sam took over the #1 spot. Sam got off to a great first half of the season and remained undefeated until March. There was a ping pong match between LT/R and K/M in which team LT/R won primarily due to Ron "The Tongue". Finally on Feb.6 all 5 played together for the first time and team K/M won and were not beaten until May 29th! TFF spent some time in the courts over whether practicing was legal, accusations of LT being on performance enhancing drugs, and over a lost scorecard. There were some sad times such as when TFF was forced to fire Ashley as blog administrator and LT hired K's on son to defend him against K. However, just when it looked like TFF was going under, Obama bailed them out. In March, TFF determined that keeping up with club tosses and other acts of frustration was interfering with the "natural responses of the game" and no longer allowed. This was the only stat that K was sure to win and proved detrimental especially to him. Perhaps K's greatest round of the year was while he was in Panama yet managed to boggy every hole and lead his team to victory. Without a doubt, the most emotional round of the year was when during the round, K retired his driver in honor of Gary Player playing in his last Masters. Early in June TFF allowed the fans to vote on who they felt was the leader in the race for The Provisional Mulligan Cup. The fans spoke loud and clear as Karl received 57% of the votes. His partner Mike was a distant second with a mere 21%. There was the infamous "That's Good" ruling while riding home from The Farms. Who can forget "The Miracle At Mirimichi" where Ron birdied 4 holes and was even on the last 14? There was the 15 week wining streak of team LT/R which came to an end the same day K overcame Shilohfallsophobia. TFF showed their love for the game as they played through a hurricane at Jackson National. There were so many other memories such as Shankapotamos and of course Darby Day. TFF blog would love for all to contribute by commenting about their favorite memories, but now it's time to list each candidate's claim both for and against them winning The Provisional Mulligan Cup.

The Provisional Mulligan Cup Defined

As the 2009 season has drawn to a close, it's time to begin discussing the winner of this year's award. However, before we can do that, perhaps we need to define just exactly what is TPMC and what are we voting for? Your first question will most likely be:What do you mean when you say voting? If you remember, last year's winner,LT, received the award without a vote by his peers. TFF is pleased to announce that this year there will be a vote on a day to be determined(it's still possible that there could be more play this year). TFF has set up the following regulations for voting:
1.It will be secret ballot
2.Only the 5 members of TFF will be allowed to vote
3.The member will not be allowed to vote for himself
4.The member will rank the other 4 players from 1st to 4th with 1st being the player he feels should win the award.(unless of course the player feels he should win the award. In this case he would vote #1 to the player he feels should finish 2nd to him since the rules prohibit a player voting for himself.)
5.Just like golf, low score wins
6.The players will vote one of the wives to be this years accountant, who will total the votes,record the winner and place the winners name in an envelope.
7.This envelope will be hermetically sealed and kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar until noon the day of the award ceremony on Funk and Wagnell's porch.(Can you imagine anybody born after 1980 trying to figure this requirement out?)
Now we know how the vote will work, but exactly what are we voting for? Is TPMC winner the player with the lowest scoring average?,best head to head record?,most improved player?, player who overcomes the most adversities?,player that plays up to his potential the best?, nicest player?,best team player?,player who drives the most?, player who sits in the middle of the back seat the most?,player who sets up the tee times?, player who buys the most lunches?, player who contributes the most to the promotion of TFF?, well as you can see we could go on and on. The only precedent that we have is that LT won it last year. Was he the best player? If best player was the only requirement, it might as well be The Friday Twosome because there would only be two possible candidates.I feel LT was the obvious winner last year due to his dramatic comeback from heart surgery. In 2007 LT was struggling to hit the ball 150 yards and couldn't finish 18 holes. In 2008 he was driving the ball far enough to play from the same tees as the other 4. Hopefully before the vote, TFF will give each members achievements for 2009 and reasons why they should win as well as why they shouldn't. In the future, we will have a better record of what each player has done in the past, which may help in voting. In the end, each voter will decide for himself who he feels deserves to win TPMC.

Last Match Of 2009?

On perhaps the last match of the year, K,LT,S, and Mike traveled to Chickasaw GC on an exceptionally nice December day. While these four were enjoying a relaxing day at the links, Ron was protecting the free word from the evil duck. Thanks to Ron and men like him we can all sleep a little better at night knowing that there are a few less ducks out there. LT believing that the great comeback that team K/M made at The Tennessean earlier this year was a fluke, took on Sam as his partner for the second time. Although Sam has proved himself as a formidable opponent in matches against Mike, in his only match of the year competing against Karl, he was obviously unable to withstand the pressure and faultered on the back nine at The Tennessean allowing team K/M to win. The foursome was 7 over on hole #1, thanks to LT and K's triples. When Karl hit a 14 footer for birdie on the true putting greens on #4 team K/m went up 2. They were up 5 at the turn. K got his second birdie on #12, and when Mike birdied #13(after Karl made the find of the year on M's second shot), their team was up 9 and cruised on to victory. The loss left Sam without a victory in team play this year and it may be a while before we see team LT/S in action again. In the only head to head match of the day, K was able to build a 5 stroke lead after 12 and went on to win. It is doubtful that there will be another opportunity for any more play this year and the 2009 season perhaps has come to an end. In the very near future we will hope to publish all the stats for the year and of course voting for The Provisional Mulligan Cup winner will be voted on by all five of TFF at the end of the year. TFF would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and better golfing in 2010!!

Karl Considers Trade To The Saturday Fivesome

For the first time this year, TFF played on Saturday(Nov. 28th) and it was a great day for Karl who won 3 lunches. All 5 made the trip to Falcon Ridge. Team K/M giving 14 points, were down 1 after 2, but when they went up 1 after 4 they would never trail again. They were up 7 at the turn and closed the match out on #15. Mike's birdie on #3 allowed him to be even after 9 and up 1 on Sam who birdied #5. Mike doubled both 10 and 12, but was able to birdie 14. Sam was unable to make much of a charge but was able to pick up 1 and had to settle for another tie with Mike. Ron got off to a bad start but was the low man on the back with a 40 and was able to beat Mike(M gave R 10). LT started ok but had a bad back(actually it's a bad shoulder). Karl had a chance for a good score until his only double of the day on 13 was followed by a triple. However, Karl was all smiles as he won 3 meals and is undefeated this year in Saturday play.

Darby Has His Day, Leads Team To Victory

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Mike and Karl have agreed to drop their lawsuit against TFF. In an out of court settlement, TFF promised to never again support, back, and or promote the celebration of Darby Day. Also, TFF agreed to pay for counseling for both Mike and Karl who are both suffering from Post Darby Day Syndrome. Now that the lawsuit is over, TFF can report on perhaps the most eventful match of the year. Darby Day began with a catered meal from Chic Fillet as well as a sack of treats for Ron. The fivesome drove to Ross Creek in what would become another beautiful day. Ron began the celebration of his day by holing out a sand shot for birdie on #1 and 3 holes later birdied #4 to give his team a 3 point lead. Two holes later, LT birdied #6(#5 handicap) putting LT/R up 4 and they would finish out the front nine with a 3 point lead. M/K however, felt pretty confident as in recent history, team LT/R have faltered on the back nine. At the turn, Sam was up 1 in his weekly battle with Mike. Mike gave Ron 10 strokes so Ron was up 9 strokes after posting a 42. Ron gave Karl 1 stroke so he was up 5. Karl gave LT 2 and LT was still up 2 despite posting a 48. Sam began the back with a beautiful approach shot on #10 and nailed his putt for a rare if ever seen birdie on this most challenging hole. Mike doubled putting Sam up 4. TFF recorded 5 bogies on #11 which put LT/R up 5points with 7 to go. Mike and Karl both parred #12 to pick up a much needed 2 points. When Mike recorded the only par on #13, he not only led his team to within 1, but also got back to within 2 of Sam. However, Sam nailed a 51.5 foot birdie putt on the par 3 #14 to increase his lead back to 4. With only a 1 point lead going into #15, LT inspired his team as he nailed a 19 footer for birdie and a 3 point lead. He followed that up with a par on #16 and put his team up 4 and dormie with 2 holes to play. In individual matches at this point: S up 3 on M, R is up 4 on M and 3 on K, LT is up 3 on K. Despite the odds, team K/M were able to capitalize on a triple by LT and a quadruple by R to get back to 2. Everyone hit a good drive on the long and dangerous #18 except for K who hit a classic elephant's butt drive (high and stinky). Still in possession of his mulligan and after a long consultation with his partner, K hit another drive and improved it by 100 yards. Things looked good for K/M when R shanked his third shot. Ron's 4th shot was executed well but still 12 feet away. LT posted a 6 which gave him a 1 stroke victory over K. K and M both made easy bogies, with both just missing long par attempts. As Ron lined up his 12 foot bogie, he had to make it for not only a team win but also a win over K and a tie with M. Has ever such pressure rested on any man's shoulders? Ron nailed the putt and with tears in his eyes, he thanked all for honoring him with Darby Day. " It was the best day of my life! the only way it could have been any better was that if my partner LT hadn't eaten all my cookies."

Darby Day Ends In Lawsuit

Late Friday night, TFF was contacted by lawyers representing the ACLU that there will be legal action over what they referred to as:" The forced celebration of Darby Day." Apparently, TFF members Karl and Mike are suing TFF claiming that their constitutional rights were broken when they were forced to celebrate a holiday that was against their personal beliefs. Also, they claim that their First Amendment rights of freedom of speech were violated. The ACLU is bringing in their top gun attorneys in what is sure to be a landmark case that could set a precedence for similar lawsuits. Both Mike and Karl were obviously shaken as they released a joint statement to the press:"We both firmly believe that every person has the right to celebrate whatever holiday they choose in whatever way they deem best for them. However, it is not the right, nor even the privilege, of TFF to expose and or force their members to celebrate a holiday that goes against their core beliefs.Over 200 years ago, the United States government was established to create freedom for all citizens to believe, worship, and celebrate according to their individual convictions, and to protect citizens from being proselytised and forced to celebrate without their consent. We believe TFF was created for the purpose of individual enjoyment and not for the members to be exposed to forced glorification of another member. Mike and I both regret that we allowed ourselves to participate in Darby Day to the extent that we did and apologize to our fans. We both pledge that henceforth we will make every effort to avoid being nice to Darby." Due to the pending lawsuit, TFF has announced that all scores(especially birdies) and all matches both team and individual will be declared null and void until a settlement is reached.

Remember,Friday Is The First Annual Be Nice To Darby Day

Absolutely perfect! What else could you say? Sam, Mike, Ron, and Karl traveled to The Farms this past Friday on perhaps the most beautiful day of the year. LT had flown down to Destin in his private jet to collect his standard appearance fee to play with a few amateurs. LT makes such appearances occasionally throughout the year for an undisclosed amount. However, TFF has learned that The Australian Masters had to settle for Tiger Woods( 3 million appearance fee)because they couldn't"t afford LT. Meanwhile, back on The Farms, everything was going Karl's way, as he was up 4 on Ron(K got 2 strokes) as the foursome approached the 8th tee box. #8 was the site of one of the most controversial holes of the year. It was on #8 back in July that the now infamous "That's Good rule Of 09" was put into TFF's rulebook. In case you don't remember,Karl was slightly struggling on this hole as he was putting for an 11( 3 lost balls,1 out of bounds). It was at this time that Ron said, "that's good". However, Karl didn't hear him, missed the short putt and recorded a 12 on the hole. it wasn't until the ride home that it was discovered by Mike that Karl actually had scored 1 shot better than everyone thought. The new score allowed K to tie R. Well, ever since then, Ron has argued that the ruling by TFF was not only wrong but un-biblical. Ron's point is that God's grace is for all men, but in order to receive His grace a man must accept it. In other words, God doesn't force his grace on anyone. It's a free gift, but it must be accepted. Unfortunately for the man that never accepts God's grace, once he dies, it's too late and he is doomed to an eternity in Hell. Ron's point is that when a round of golf is over, the scores are totaled and you either win or lose. Either way, it's over and there is nothing you can do.(just like when your life is over) Ron goes on to claim that Karl never accepted the "that's good" until it was too late.(again,similar to the man who dies without accepting God's grace, it's too late) Well, perhaps this theological discussion has soom merit and an application to golf. As a result of Ron's protest, TFF Rules Committee(composed of Karl), will reopen the case and further consider this unique case. However, any change in the ruling will go into effect for the 2010 season and all matches this year will continue to play under the "That's Good Ruling of 09." Well, back to #8 where Karl improved his score by 7 strokes and birdied the hole. Mike missed perhaps the best chance for TFF's first eagle of the year by leaving his 18 foot putt short. Sam also birdied #8. At the turn,M-37,S-39, K-42,R-47. However, when Ron birdied #12 he cut Karl's lead to just 3 strokes. The 17th hole proved crucial to Karl when he parred and Ron doubled to go up 4 with one to go. Karl approached the 18th with a conservative 5 wood off the tee into the water. With strokes still to spare he preceded to hit his third shot into the water also. Now the match was on as Ron hit a perfect lay up. No longer Mr. Conservative, Karl grabbed his 3 wood. He needed to carry 200 yards and did ending up 10 yards over the green. Ron's 3rd shot was about 19 feet from the hole with a very good look at a birdie.Karl's sixth shot was a thing of beauty, as it lipped the cup(nothing ever drops for Karl) and wound up about 6 feet away. When Ron's birdie attempt just missed, Karl lagged up to within the leather, took his 8 and a perfect 1 stroke victory over Ron.
Tomorrow, TFF will be celebrating the first annual "Be Nice To Darby Day". It is expected that all members of TFF will go out of their way to be considerate of Ron's needs and be courteous to him at all times.

Shankapotamus Leads Team To Victory

On the first Friday in November, the sun returned from it's 2 month hiatus for a beautiful day. S, LT, K, And M travelled to the challenging by design and extraordinary by nature; The Tennessean. Due to Ron's absence, LT teamed up with the usually Lone Ranger Sam. As usual, K was stuck with Mike. Also, the 4 were joined by M's friend Rusty, who made his 2nd appearance with TFF. After some confusion about the rules of golf, such as after you play hole #1 you move on to hole #2 and not return to play hole #1 over if you don't like what you made the first time, the match was on. After 3 holes, the match was all square. However, on hole #4, Mike made the strategic move of the year. Unbeknownst to even his partner, Mike pretended to become Shankapotamus. In the Urban Dictionary, Shankapotamus is defined as: "Someone who has the "shanks" so bad and is all over the golf course, usually making everyone around him uncomfortable." Believe me, Shankapotamus had us all very uncomfortable as he posted a 9 on #4. Shankapotamus went on to record 2 double bogies and post a season high 46 on the front. Team LT/S were 9 up at the turn and confident of a free lunch. Shankapotamus had other plans as he responded with a 37. Sam who with the aid of 2 birdies on the front, was even as he teed it up on #10. The pressure of a rejuvenated Shankapotamus, however, was too much for Sam as he doubled 4 of the first 5 on the back to go on to score his worst 9 of the year with a 45. After 8 holes, team K/M were only 1 point down and needed both low ball and total score for a victory. K who was playing "steady", was 2 up on LT going into 17. K hit a perfect drive, but did a Shankapotamus impersonation himself and made a triple. LT and K were tied going into #18(with K giving LT 1 stroke). K, still a little angry over his 7 on #17, hit his drive into the woods. LT only needed a drive in the fairway for a sure victory, but followed K into the woods. K got a 6, LT a 7 and Shankapotamus sunk his birdie putt for the team victory. Tomorrow, TFF(minus LT) will travel to The Farms for the first Friday the 13th match of the year.

The Friday Fivesome Survive Category 5 Hurricane

On the last Friday in October, and in the heart of the monsoon season, TFF teed it up at Jackson National. Fortunately, the eye of the hurricane was passing over as they played the front nine. All 5 were present for the match that was sure to be rained out. After 9: Sam had a 37 with 2 birdies and a three stroke lead over his nemesis Mike. K-43,LT-46, and Ron who had a tough 9 on #3 had a 47. Team K/M had a 3 point lead. As TFF made the turn, the weather made a turn for the worse as on and off heavy rains(mostly on) sat in for the duration. If it were not for the constant encouragement by Ron to continue play, the other 4 would have called it quits. Ron went on to lead his team to victory, as he hit a tough 4 foot downhiller on 18 for a 1 point victory. Due to everyone being drenched, TFF was unable to dine. At last word, LT's car should be dried out by Thanksgiving.

Karl Overcomes Shilohfallsophobia

Being afraid of something that can cause harm is a normal reaction. However, some people show strong persistent and irrational fears of particular objects, activities or situations. When this behavior interferes with normal everyday functioning, the condition is called a phobia. Encountering the phobic stimulus results in intense anxiety, causing increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, shaking and sweating. Although the phobic may acknowledge the anxiety is disproportionate to the threat, this does little to reduce the fear and they are highly motivated to avoid it. Karl suffers from Shilohfallsophobia(fear of golfing at Shiloh Falls).It's been over a year since TFF has traveled to Shiloh Falls, yet each Thursday night Karl is in a state of panic as he anticipates the much dreaded call of where TFF will play on Friday. When Mike made the call this week, he couldn't tell Karl where they were going, but Karl knew and immediately he began to react to his phobia. After a sleepless night, K was picked up by Ron and got in the back seat with LT who was attempting to overcome one of his phobias,Lygophobia (fear of darkness). The four drove to the church to pick up Sam whose primary phobia is cherophobia(fear of being happy) and this explains why he loves to golf. Sam was glad to see that Ron was driving because when Mike drives not only Sam but K, R, and LT all suffer from amaxophobia(fear of riding in a car). Alot of Mike's driving problems come from one of his phobias, erythrophobia(fear of red lights). Ron is perhaps the best of the five at hiding his phobias, but it has long been suspected that he has defecaloesiophobia(fear of painful bowel movements) as well as arachibutyrophobia(fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth). Ron has also shown signs of phronemophobia(fear of thinking). Ron and his longtime partner,LT, both suffer from ecclesiophobia(fear of church)on Wednesday night but Ron has been attempting to overcome this fear as of late. Well, TFF arrived at the course just as the sun was coming up and Mike spotted a couple of other golfers in the parking lot and immediately insisted that everyone hurry up so that we could beat them to the tee box. Without a doubt, Mike's greatest phobia is macrophobia(fear of waiting). It had rained alot over the night which meant golf paths only and LT's phobia of ambulophobia(fear of walking). As Karl teed it up on #1 he attempted to remember what his sports psychologist had told him. It seems that Karl's shilohfallsophobia stems from two other phobias that he possesses, both dendrophobia(fear of trees) and leukophobia(fear of the color white and in Karl's case fear of white stakes). Shiloh Falls has alot of trees, but according to Karl, the white stakes out number the trees 2 to 1. For the past year, Karl has been undergoing hypnotherapy. In this particular treatment for phobias, the patient is deeply relaxed while the therapist talks to the unconscious mind. They are also given relaxation cues to call upon when they next encounter the stimulus. The method has been proven to reduce the level of anxiety experienced within a single session with some patients but took 52 for Karl. So each time LT reminded Karl of the white stakes, his mind was triggered to only see wide fairways and large greens.
Nonetheless, team LT/R was able to jump out to a 2 point lead after 5 holes. The front 9 was highlighted by birdies by M on #4, R on #5, M again on #7, and Sam on #8. K/M took a 5 point lead at the turn. M started the back with a birdie on #10. Clearly, the shot of the day was performed by Ron on #11. His drive was wide left, and he hit his 2nd shot into the green side trap. His third shot was an unbelievable sand shot that died into the hole for a par. Team LT/R closed it to 4 but could not hold onto the momentum and by hole #16, the match was over. LT was able to birdie # 17. In individual matches both K and M defeated R. K was also able to beat LT. In what has become a weekly battle for the yearly head to head winner, M and S tied with both posting a 76. This leaves M with a slim 1 victory lead. Hope that all will be able to play next week as the year is coming to an end quickly. TFF would appreciate your input has to how and when to vote for this year's Provisional Mulligan Cup. Of course for Mike who suffers from cyberphobia(fear of computers), his lovely wife Dianne whose phobia is ranidaphobia(fear of frogs), will have to respond for him.

Well, it's been 3 weeks since TFF's last report. M,R,S, and Karl with a K traveled to Decaturville to play The Tennessee River Golf Club and listen to M reminisce the same old childhood stories. If you remember one of the reasons for this blog was that none of us could remember what happened the week before. Neither M or S could remember playing in Decaturville this year. However, M,S, LT, and K played there back in Jan. The trip was highlighted by S knocking the #17 tee marker 18.7 yards and a very generious leaf rule that was given to LT. Since it's been 3 weeks, this TFF reporter can't remember much about the match. S had the only birdie and it didn't occur until #15.

All Square

Last Friday, M,S,K, and a first time guest to TFF, Clark(M's son) went to Jones Creek to experience what Mike had heard were "awesome" greens. However, it was later discovered that M was not wearing his hearing aid when he called to ask about the course. What he heard was "awesome" but what Jeff the club manager really said was "awful". To try to make the match interesting, K agreed to allow Clark to be on his team and S and M got to team up for the first time this year. From the start, it was clear that Clark was out of his league. His drives were typically 60-70 yards from the others and that alone put him at a real disadvantage. While K was often able to use his 5 wood on his approach shot, Clark was forced to use his pitching wedge. Despite K's stellar play, S and M went on to an easy victory and TFF only hopes that Clark will not be too discouraged by his performance. K, tried to take some of the blame for the loss, but it was obvious to all that Clark was unable to handle the pressure of playing with "The Legend".
As the month of September has come to a close, the intensity of playing for the Provisional Mulligan Cup, has increased. One interesting observation, is the head to head match up of S and M. The two have played head to head 19 times this year. Sam got off to an impressive start by winning the first 5 meetings between the two.Mike responded by winning the next 3, but this only motivated Sam to win the next 4 and take a 9-3 advantage. However, in the last 6 matches, Mike has won 5 and tied the other 1. So going into Friday's match, S held onto a very slender lead of 9-8-1(tie). M took an early 3 stroke lead after the first 4 holes and went on to post a 2 stroke lead at the turn. S gained 1 back on #10 and then hit perhaps the putt of the year, a 90 foot 3 inch putt for birdie, that squared the match up. Mike parred the challenging #14 par 3 over the water to go up 1. M and S both stepped it up a notch off the tee on # 18, easily out driving Clark. S, failed to come through on his approach shot and M went on to a 2 stroke victory. So, as we approach the last 3 months of play, Sam and mike are all square.

The Comeback Kids

Finally!! After 15 weeks all 5 of TFF were able to make the short drive to Jackson National to engage in a fierce battle of spades.Since nobody wanted to be partners with Mike, Karl sent Mike out in the rain to work on his short game.(that's the only game he has- a Short game, get it?) Anyway, team LT/R took on team K/S. Team LT/R got off to a fast start, bidding and making 10 for 200 on the very first hand and actually winning 11 tricks. However, superior play by team K/S who have faced much tougher competition in international play in Panama, went on to an easy win. After cards, the rain was looking worse, so TFF drove to Community Grocery for breakfast. After the meal, the rain began to slow down and with all 5 eager to play, they returned to the course to give it a try. Despite a steady drizzle with an occasional down pour on an already soaked course, playing conditions actually weren't too bad. The big question of the day was what Ron accomplished at Mirimichi for real or was "The Miracle at Mirimichi" just that; a miracle. Just like in spades, team R/LT came out strong. Ron rolled in a 5 footer for birdie on #1 and after the first 4 holes the red hot team went up 8 on team K/M. It was at this point that K took charge and by grinding out an impressive 10 over on the next 4 holes slowed down the LT/R express to only being up by 9 after 8. It was obvious to K that M was having difficulty handling the pressure of not winning in 17 straight weeks. K knew that if team K/M were to have a chance, he would have to carry the team and forget about the individual glory of personal victories. K parred #9 winning 2 points and cut the lead to only 7. After 9 holes: R and M had 42's, LT and S had 44's, K stood alone with a 53. It was at hole #11 that K really got things going, chipping in from above the green for a birdie which brought a deafening roar from K's fans(often refereed to as Karl's Karavan.) Not only did K's chip-in( now known as the shot heard around Jackson National) seem to wake up his basket case partner M, but it struck fear in team LT/R. Mike who was down 8 to R at the turn, would go on to beat R by 10 on the back. By hole # 15 the team match was all square and despite R's dramatic chip-in bogie on #18(which allowed him to beat K by 1 with the 4 strokes that R had to give K), team K/M went on to victory snapping their long losing streak. S, who had his worst 9 of the year on the front and despite being tutored in math 2 days a week, couldn't manage to add up his 44. Lacking in math skills, he attempted to keep his back 9 math simpler, he just missed having all 4s with a 5 on the par 4 #16. S did pick up 2 birdies on both par 5s and was able to tie M with an 81. The story of the day,however, had to be the team performance and leadership that K exhibited in this come from behind match. It was overheard by one TFF voter speaking about K's performance:"What K did today turned some heads as well as some voters onto his bandwagon and he vastly improved his rankings for this year's Provisional Mulligan Cup."

Only 15 Weeks Left In 2009 Season

5-1, that's it. After 37 weeks of the 2009 season, team K/M lead team LT/R by the score of 5-1. Team K/M started the year strong going undefeated the first 20 weeks of the year. It was at that point that LT( sometimes referred to as The Nostradamus of Golf), predicted that they would not lose again this year. True to his word, team LT/R have not lost in 17 weeks, picking up 1 win during the streak. Now, with only 15weeks left in the season, is there any chance that team K/M will ever win again?? Also, time is running out for players to make moves in the race for The Provisional Mulligan Cup. So, who is the current leader? Mainly due to lack of play as a result of injuries and work, LT's hopes of maintaining the coveted trophy look slim. Karl's hopes are all but gone(as if there ever was any hope.) Ron, on the other hand, has come on strong after a slow start and could become a leading candidate if his play continues to improve. Many, however, are predicting that it could come down to the winner of the Mike-Sam duel which is currently being won by Sam in scoring average by .97 strokes per round. Although Mike would have trouble overcoming such a deficit in only 15 weeks, he still could pull off the head to head matches against his Nemesis. So, best of luck to everyone as we enter the stretch run for TPM Trophy!
Last Friday, K,S,and M went to Jackson National for the first time since its' redesign. All were very pleased with the improvements and it could become a regular stop for TFF.

Mirimichi

This past Friday Sam, LT, Ron, and Karl traveled into Millington to play at Justin Timberlake's new course Mirimichi. Mirimichi is getting national recognition with predictions that it will become the #1 ranked public course in America. Also, there is talk of it someday hosting a U.S. Open. Since all 5 of TFF have now played the course at least once, TFF will reflect on their impressions. First, Mike believes it's the greatest thing since the invention of the Bell's hamburger. According to Mike, the English translation of the Indian word Mirimichi would be :"Almost Heaven." Sam, who has played the course twice, said: "There's no doubt that it's a great course, however, it will never host a US Open. There is not enough room to handle the crowds." Sam's translation of Mirimichi is:"Great course that costs too much." Perhaps the most knowledgeable opinion of how this course ranks, would be that of the reining Provisional Mulligan Cup holder, LT. LT's travel experiences of playing elite courses is unsurpassed among TFF. Although LT recognises that Mirimichi is a very good course, he would rank Spring Creek ahead of it. He also feels that Ross Creek is also a better course. For LT Mirimichi translates:" You could have played Ross Creek twice for what you just payed to play here." Karl was impressed with the course, but a little disappointed after all the raves from Mike. He agrees with LT that Ross Creek is a better course, especially if they could spend the money that was spent on Mirimichi. He also agrees with Sam that it will never host a US Open. Not only would it not be able to handle the crowds on the course, but there are no hotels, restaurants, and traffic would be a big problem. For Karl, Mirimichi translates:"overrated" Finally, there's Ron who played his best round of the year and would naturally love the course. Ron's translation of the Indian word Mirimichi was:"Man plays from women's tees."(we'll explain shortly)
K and S parred #1 then S birdied #2. Karl then pulled off what might have been the shot of the year on #3 with a 38 yard chip-in birdie. After 4 holes Karl was 7 strokes up on both LT and Ron. (R gave him 3 and LT gave him 1). At this point Ron declared that he was moving up to the gold tees. Karl was forced to go with him due to the lunch wager. It would prove costly to K, while giving Ron the boost he needed. Ron played even par for the next 14 holes. Both LT and Sam birdied #6. On #7 Ron hit the shot of the year. He holed out a blind 31 foot chip-in that had to be seen to believe. He then followed that up with a birdie 2 on #8. After 9: S-36,R-41,LT-44,K-44. By the way, K got out of the deep bunker on #9 with 1 swing and left the ball 10 feet from the hole( His ball wasn't in the bunker, he just dropped a ball to see if he could get out. In fact, much to the dissatisfaction of LT, K was only in 1 bunker all day.)
Although Sam continued to play well on the back, (and unlike R and K he also continued to play from the men's tees) the rest of the day belonged to Ron. He got his 3rd birdie on #12. Karl got his second birdie on a par 3 on #13 but it was too little too late. Ron coasted to victory and topped it off with his 4th birdie on #18 and a 1 under 35 on the back nine!! After lunches were bought, Karl owes Ron 1 lunch and will get 4 strokes. LT and K are even and will play even.

The Final Four??

With a devastating loss to Ron at his home course, Karl(with a K) may be on the brink of elimination from this year's Provisional Mulligan Cup. Last week he suffered defeat in a close match with LT, and finds himself clearly behind both LT and Ron at this point . Ron, Sam, K, and K's son in law, Ryan went to Humboldt this past Friday. Ron had to give K 2 strokes. Karl was quickly up 3 with a par on #1, but when Ron birdied #7 it was all square. Ron's par on #8 put him up 1. Meanwhile, Sam despite bogies on #1and #2, went on to record a one over 36. When he birded #15 he was back to even. A disappointing bogie on #16 was costly, but Sam went on to record a 1 over 71. Karl started the back with 2 pars and was back up 1. However, Ron birdied #12 to even things up. As they approached the difficult #17 (a 310 yard monster par 4), Ron held a 1 stroke lead. Ron was happy to get a 6 while Karl managed to only take 4 shots from 55 yards out for a 5 and to square the match up. Karl hit his tee shot on #18 into #17's fairway, so he took his mulligan and hit it into the green side pond. He dropped by the ladies tee box on #17 and hit his 3rd shot 3 feet from the hole. Ron took an easy par, but despite the penalty stroke, all Karl needed was to hit the short putt for a tie. It wasn't even close. When asked about his experience of getting to play with the Friday Fivesome, Ryan had this to say:"Without a doubt, it was the highlight of my life. What amazing athletes! You can read the blog all you want, but until you actually experience the intensity of these matches, you really are clueless." Karl owes Ron 1 lunch and will get 3 strokes next time.

Rule 14-4

Rule 14-4 proved costly to Karl today as K,LT,M, and LT's friend David made the long trip to Ross Creek. It was probably the hottest day of the year but the course was in excellent condition. LT got off to a 5 stroke lead over Karl as he parred the first two holes while K doubled and tripled. Karl was badly misled by Mike's distance calculation on #2 which by itself cost him the match , but Mike was giving LT putts all day and forced Karl into reluctantly giving them also. Mike played well all day and finished with 3 birdies. His 1st was on # 5 where he hit the shot of the day to within 3.5 feet and was even par after making the putt.. His only mishap was a double on #8, but he followed it up with a birdie on #9 and finished with a 38. Mike inflicted the greatest pain to Karl on #7.(other than when he hit Karl's bag after a missed putt, breaking Karl's priceless Maui Jim glasses case.) LT was in the bunker laying 4. His 5th shot was miss hit and would have gone 20 yards off the green, leaving LT with a 7 at best. Instead, Mike stops the ball and knocks it back to LT giving him a 6. When they got back to the cart an irate Karl confronted Mike about giving LT a 6. His response was " I felt sorry for him." Karl's response was" ****! Why didn't you feel sorry for me when I was getting an 8 on #2?? I'm 2 strokes down!! "After 9: LT 45, K 47. Karl got to with in 1 as they teed off on # 14. Karl hit his 8 iron on the par 3 way short an apparently into the ditch. He hit a provisional mulligan to within 5 feet. LT who seemed to enjoy the beach all day was in the sand and would take a 5 on the hole. All Karl needed was to not find his ball and he would have at least a 1 stroke lead. (2 if he hit the 5 foot birdie) Of course Mike is determined to find Karl's ball. The ball is found and Karl proceeds to hit his 2nd and 3rd shots with one swing of the club. Rule 14-4 states : "If a player's club strikes the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke, making two strokes in all." Karl would get a 6 and would go on to lose by 1 to LT. Mike birdied #17 for his 3rd birdie of the day. Karl will get 1 stroke from LT next time, and they are even on lunches.

"That's Good"

"That's good" are words every player loves to hear, even if they don't hear it. (I'll explain later.) S,K,R, and M traveled to Dyersburg to play The Farms on an unseasonably cool and beautiful Friday. Although a little wet,(cart paths only), the course was in excellent condition. Mike was feeling frisky and demanded that we play from the back tees. M gave R 10 strokes and R gave K 2. Ron hit a 22 foot putt on #1 for birdie. Karl hit the shot of the day on #2, a 215 yard 5 wood into the wind to within 6 feet. He hit the putt to go 1 under. His stellar play continued and despite having two 5 foot putts lip out, was 2 over going into #8. Karl hit a perfect drive over the lake, He took his trusty 5 wood and hit a good shot pin high but left. Unfortunately, the ball had apparently hit the cart path and was just out of bounds. Karl went to drop where his drive was and completed the hole. However, as he stood over his putt for an 11, the rest of the group had departed for #9. Karl hit what he thought was a perfect 5 foot putt only to have it go 365 degrees around the hole, so he tapped in for a 12. While Karl struggled on the hole, Sam had his only birdie of the day. At the turn: S-37,M-40,R-41,K-46.Ron putted well all day and sank a nice putt for his second birdie on #12. Karl fought his way back but was only able to get within 3 going into #18. Karl laid up his second shot to 138 yards. Ron, however, hit his second into the water. Ron's 4th shot just made it over the water(thanks to encouragement from Karl) and was to the left of the green. Karl's 3rd was about 14 feet from the hole. He hit an absolute perfect birdie putt, only to see it lip out. Ron was able to get on, 2 putt, and get a 7 for an apparent 1 stroke victory over Karl. Mike hit a nice 9 footer for his only birdie of the day, but Ron was able to beat Mike by 2. Now, back to "That's Good". As the four players headed to Neil's for lunch, Karl was reminiscing how many putts he had lip out, and especially the one on #8 for a 12. His partner Mike then asked: "You mean you counted that missed putt? Ron had already said "That's Good". So Karl went from the depths of despair to the sweet taste of victory(or at least a tie).

Darby Celebrates Early Birthday

Today, Ron takes one step closer to the senior tees and TFF wishes the Yankee Doodle Dandy a happy birthday! Yesterday, he hit drives like he should have already been hitting from the white tees, and his ability to keep score showed early signs of Alzheimer's. S,K,LT, and R went to the newly reopened and renamed Chickasaw GC. It was in good shape and had the best crowd playing that TFF had ever seen. However, TFF fears that the green fees are too high and will hinder many from playing. TFF would highly suggest lower fees, promotions, advertising,anything they could do to increase play. Anyway, the weather was perfect, but the score keeping was not. The problem occurred on #1 where R hit his second shot in the water and somehow managed a bogey 6. Four hours later, on the way home, R confessed that he should have had a 7. It was too little too late for K. K birdied #3 and was playing well until hole #8 where he took a double. Ron was all over the course, but thanks to Sam finding his ball on every hole was scoring well. His drive on #8 just missed the hole for an easy birdie and a 3 stroke swing with K that would prove to be the difference in the match. Sam hit the ball well all day and made the turn with a 37(1 bogey 3 putt on #8). He was feeling pretty good about himself until Ron announced that he had a 38.(This would be later changed to a 39) LT was struggling but was only 4 strokes behind K at the turn. However, his start on the back appeared to do him in. His first drive appeared to be in the ditch. His mulligan went deep into the woods. He dropped and hit his third shot into the woods. While crossing the ditch LT was prepared to drop and hit his 5th shot. Guess what he ended up getting? That's right a birdie! Only the current Provisional Mulligan Cup holder and creator of "LT Rules" could pull off such a score. He found his drive across the ditch, knocked it up onto the green then hit a 29 foot putt for birdie! K took a bogey 5 and suddenly LT was within 2 strokes of K. However,LT was right back out of it with a 8 on #12 and never regained any steam. Sam's good play continued paring the first 2 but took a double on the par 3 12th. He got 1 back on the tough #17 with his only birdy. and finished with another 37. Karl believing that he was 2 strokes down (with 1 stroke R had to give) hit the drive of his life on #18 and was 115 out. His 2nd shot was 14 feet from the hole. When his birdy attempt was just short, he gave Ron a 5 footer for par thinking the match was over. This brings us back to the controversial scoring by R on #1. Oh well, it's too late now, Happy Birthday Ron!

The Fans Have Spoken!!!

In a landslide vote, Karl(with a K) was the overwhelming choice as the leader at the half-way point for this year's Provisional Mulligan Cup. The vote total slightly missed surpassing American Idol's almost 100 million votes. A TFF spokesman stated," We would have easily out numbered American Idol's total if we allowed more than 1 vote per person like they do." Nonetheless, the fans spoke loud and clear about their choice. Karl totaled 57% of the votes, while the other 4 combined accounted for only 43% with Mike a distant 2nd with 21%.Karl stated:"I'm really surprised that I didn't win by more, but alot of these fans know very little about what The Provisional Mulligan Cup is all about. I'm sure if you asked the other 4 in the group that I would be the unanimous choice at this point and barring some catastrophe this year's trophy is all mine."
TFF blogspot has some catching up to do. The lawsuit by LT put everything in limbo and we just now have our feet back on the ground. To refresh your memory, the lawsuit was over the missing scorecard that was later found to be in Karl's home. It was the scorecard from the first victory of the year by team LT/R at The Tennessean. They dominated the match closing out on hole #17.

A couple of notes:
1. Hole #16 is now a par 4 making par 71.
2. Ron's friend Ernie played with us and as a result "The Ernie Rule" was instituted as part of TFF's rules. It states:" If a player brings a friend that is dumb enough to pay off his lunch debts for him than he is allowed to do so."

Last week, K,S,M, played with Mike's friend Rusty(he didn't even offer to buy anybody a coke, so there will be no "Rusty Rule".) at Falcon Ridge. Mike had the round of the year posting a 73(1 over), while pretending that his back was hurting just in case Rusty beat him. Mike bogied #'s 5 and 10 and his lone birdie was #4. Congratulations to Mike for his score and for hopefully being a grandpa by the time he reads this!

Time to Vote!!!

As promised as part of the Karl-LT lawsuit, TFF is currently conducting a poll for the leader of this year's Provisional Mulligan Cup(player of the year). Although TFF blogspot wishes to remain neutral in this poll, we would highly recommend that you vote for Karl(with a K). Karl is the clear leader for the award, not only for his stellar play, but for his contribution to the game itself. The poll will run for one week, so we urge you to vote for Karl(with a K) and please call a friend to vote for him also. Also in the poll are; s, m, r, l, but we don't see any reason to waste your vote on any of them.

LT Settles Out Of Court

TBI forensics specialists, with great difficulty, were able to interpret the abused scorecard from last Friday and it has been turned over to the custody of TFF blogspot. Karl(with a K) a.k.a. "The Dictator" offered to settle out of court with LT/Ron to avoid prosecution. Despite his attorney's advice, LT quickly agreed to the terms of the settlement which were:
1. All eagles, birdies, and pars that Karl recorded Friday will be struck from the record.
2. Karl is suspended from this weeks play
3. Karl will allow a "Readers Vote" sometime in June for the current leader of the player of the year
4. Karl will forfeit the one lunch he owes LT
Counselor Adam was furious with his client, LT. "We could have taken "The Dictator" for all he's worth, but when LT read the part about the forfeited lunch he immediately signed the papers. I have to admit, his legal team out foxed me. However, when I saw the scorecard and realized that Karl(with a K) not only had a round without any eagles or birdies, but didn't even par a hole last Friday, well I kinda lost my legal edge and felt kind of sorry for the old man."

TBI Claims to have Missing Scorecard

TBI officials raided the estate of Karl(with a K) early Tuesday mourning and found what they believe to be the remains of Friday's scorecard. A TBI spokesman refused to answer questions from the press, but made the following statement:"You exspect to see some horrific things in this line of work, but nothing prepares you for this. Without a doubt this is the worst case of scorecard abuse that I've ever seen. It will take forensics a while ,if ever, to be able to decipher the scores. For some reason, Karl's(with a K) score was easy to read, but we highly suspect that his score was tampered with. We have our doubts that he scored a 63 at The Tennessean."
Adam Warren, attorney for LT/Ron, was able to obtain a search warrent for the scorecard, and made this comment;"I only wish we could have gotten in there earlier and saved that scorecard from what it went through. My clients will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. The abuse that scorecard took will not go in vain!"

Team Karl/Mike Remain Undefeated

In what appeared to be LT/Ron's first victory of the year was denied by TFF administrators. Apparently the official scorecard is missing. TFF released the following statement: "According to TFF bylaws, in order for official scores to be recorded, we must have a scorecard. Until the scorecard is found, Karl/Mike are still undefeated. Also, all lost dinners must be returned."

TTF Facing Uncertain Future

Before we get into this week's actions of TFF, we must address a most uncomfortable subject: lack of viewership. Lack of viewership could lead to the demise of TFF blogspot. What can be done? First, it's important that viewers make a comment when they read this blogspot. I contacted former blog administrator Ashley for any suggestions. Her suggestion was to write about something other than golf. No wonder she was fired. Who would want to read about anything other than golf? We could show a video of a chimp scratching it's butt, sniffing it's finger, then falling backwards to increase viewership but what blogspot would stoop so low?( go to Ashley's bogspot to see the video of the chimp and several other humorous videos at: http://lifeonthenatureisle.blogspot.com/). Anyway, any suggestions to increase the popularity of this blogspot please let us know.
Now, onto this week's action! All five were able to play at Falcon Ridge on a rain free mourning. Team Karl/Mike had to give Ron/LT 14 points. After 6 holes, R/LT were up 1. Karl hit a 22 foot putt on #7 for birdie. However, Ron answered with an 18foot birdie himself. Sam then topped both birdies with an 8 footer. Team K/M picked up 1 on both #8 and #9 to finish the front all square. After 9:

Sam got the back 9 off to a good start with the shot of the day, a ninety one foot chip-in for birdie. Mike hit a 5 foot down hiller for birdie on #13 that put K/M up 3. Mike was down by what appeared to be an insurmountable 10 strokes to Ron at the turn. Even after his birdie on #13 he was still down 7. #14 proved to be a challenging hole for Ron. His tee shot forced him to lay out in front of the pond. He then hit his next two shots into the water, and finished with a 9. After 14, Ron's lead over Mike was down to 3. Ron was able to come back with a par on #15 and pick up a stroke but then triple boggied #16. With 2 holes to play, team K/M had won to remain undefeated for the year and must give 15 next time, Mike was only down 1 to Ron (making up 9 strokes in 6 holes). Karl was up 4 on Ron with the 1 stroke. LT was pretty much out of contention at this point, despite playing well for most of the day, he just couldn't score. Ron was able to pull off 2 great pars on 17 and 18 to go on to victory over Mike, but to lose by one to Karl. Sam birdied #18 to stay in the 30s. (Sam also birdied 18 last week and did not receive credit, it will be added in his yearly totals this week.)

Writer's Block

I've sat down to record Friday's action several time's, but there is something about Darby winning that interferes with my ability to write. So, briefly, Sam, Mike, Ron, Karl, and guest(Brad), went to Jones Creek and attempted to golf. Ron's 200 yard club led him to victory. Hope to see everybody next Friday.

We're All Winners!!!

Everybody won!! LT beat Mike, Mike beat Ron, Ron beat Karl, Karl/Mike beat LT/Ron, Sam beat Mike,LT beat Karl.It was a day of winners!! Well, I'm trying to be optimistic! We all stunk! Here are a few of our accomplishments at Chickasaw Friday:best ball-even(72) , worst ball-38 over(110), 1 birdie thanks to LT but he had to hit an 18.5 foot putt to keep TFF from being shut out for the first time this year, 36 bogies,17 doubles,4triples, and 1 quad. A special congratulations goes out to Karl who hit for the cycle(that's a bogie,double,triple,and quad, all in only 18 holes.(he actually had 3 doubles and 3 triples)If this were baseball, Adam Darby's stats wouldn't stand a chance against Karl's. Even Mike managed to pull off a double/double(that's back to back double bogies). Fortunately for TFF, Mike had not yet obtained his handgun permit. As suggested by LT, in the future each member of TFF will have to walk through a metal detector before being allowed to be seated in their golf cart. Despite the poor play, there were a couple of exciting matches. After Mike's double/double, team LT/Ron took a 5 point lead going into #13 and appeared headed for their 1st team victory of the year. At this point, team captain Karl called the obviously shaken Mike aside for a pep talk. When asked after the match what he said to Mike, Karl responded: "I simply told him to sit back, relax and catch a ride on the K-Train and that I would carry us to victory." True to his word, Karl had a low ball par on #13 then hit the putt of the day(23 footer) for another low ball par on #14. Heading into #15, team K/M were only 1 shot down but the K-Train was running out of steam. Team LT/Ron picked up 1 on #15 thanks to a double by Karl but the K-Train appeared to be back on track with Karl's best drive of the day on #16. However, only 215 yards out the K-Train was heading for a wreck of Casey Jones proportions. Fearing the sand, Karl elected to lay up to the right so that he would be sure to have to go over the traps. His 3rd shot went in the sand, but he caught a break when his bunker shot was able to hit a tree and remain in play . It only took 4 more shots for Karl to get his 3rd triple bogey of the day. Going into #17, Team K/M needed all 4 points for victory. Karl stepped up to the tee and following his "teacher's" advice, took the ball out over the water, brought it back in and had the "pressure" shot of the day on the back of the green. Ron took the opportunity to do some math and secretly announce to his partner LT that they were dormie. Thinking the match to be over,LT hit his 1st shot, then his mulligan into the water. Karl's low ball par brought team K/M to within 1 going into 18. A pressure packed mulligan drive by Karl, went right down the middle. LT had a good second shot, but when his putt from just off the green was left about 12 feet short and Mike's birdie putt stopped 6 inches from the hole, the pressure was on LT. If he missed the putt the match was all but over. LT's putt broke off just short of the hole and Karl's 2 putt from 6 feet gave Team K/M the victory and kept their hope for an undefeated season still alive. Mike's par also gave him a 1 stroke victory over Ron.

A brief review of Friday's Action

Sam, Mike, and Karl, teed it up at Jones Creek early Friday mourning. Without the pressure of playing against the LT/Ron team, the threesome played fast and were through by 11. Sam and Mike had a good match with Sam recording birdies on holes 8,12,13,and 16. Mike only had one birdie(#14), but was able to match Sam's 36 on the back. Sam's one stoke lead after 9 held up for a victory. Karl with a K unveiled his new driver, but without any matches refused to show too much. Hopefully, all will be able to play this week.

I thought I'd share a few pictures of Sam and I teeing off on #1 at Jaque Golf and Country Club. As you probably know, this is ranked as the hardest opening hole in all of the Darien. Just take a look at that narrow fairway!!! As you can see by my reaction, I had to hit a provisional mulligan.

A Tribute To Gary Player

In an emotional day for Karl with a K, he retired his driver in honor of Gary Player's last round at The Masters. The driver that has produced so many memories for those who have witnessed it in action, will forever live in golfing lore. This is the same driver that drove #5 green at Humboldt while teeing off on #8. However, perhaps the most famous shot(s) ever produced by any driver occured on #18 at Humboldt where Karl not only was able to hit the side of the sign for the hole once but twice, sending both balls across the highway behind the tee box. More about the driver later but first let's review today's action.
LT, Mike, Sam, and Karl returned to Jones Creek again this week. Ron was gone to watch Adam play, but a quick call from his partner LT convinced him that if Ron would take a bogey on every hole that LT could carry the load and defeat the K/M team. LT got off to another rough start and was 7 over after 2 holes. Mike, however, came out smoking.On #1 he hit a 18 footer from off the green for birdie, then came back with a 34 foot putt from off the green to go 2 under. Sam jumped with joy as he watched Mike sink the 2 putts and found himself 3 strokes behind and his #1 ranking in jeopardy. Mike took a bogey on #3, but had visions of another birdie as he teed it up in the rain on #4. Out of nowhere came a shot that had all the characteristics of a shank. Mike took his mulligan and hit a pure shank. He was able to bogey the hole, however. Despite LT's slow start, Karl was able to play poor enough to keep their match close. After nine: Mike-37, Sam-41, Karl-48, LT-50(for the second week in a row). Team K/M were only up 3 points. As the players made the turn, the wind picked up and played havoc for the rest of the day.Sam hit a great drive on #12, and followed it up with an even better second shot, setting up about a 20 footer for eagle. Karl was also only about 20 feet from the hole in 2 also but was more than happy to take a par. Mike and Sam both birdied the hole. As Karl approached the #13 tee box he was reminiscing about his old friend Gary Player playing at that very moment at Augusta. As a young lad in Memphis, Karl was watching Gary practicing on the putting green at the old Colonial Country Club. A friend of Karl's wished that he could have Gary's autograph. Karl then walked out on the green and asked Mr. Player for an autograph. Gary didn't seem to be too excited to sign but he did. Shortly afterwards, Karl not being too keen with golf etiquette at the time, decided he might as well get an autograph for himself also. He returned back to Mr. Player as he was putting, an requested another autograph. Well as you can imagine, Gary was not exactly overwhelmed to see me again, and gave me some personal advice on manners in a somewhat aggravated foriegn accent.(However, he did give me an autograph)Anyway, after Karl boomed a 268 yard drive right down the middle on #13, his mind was made up, in honor of Gary Player he was never going to hit his legendary driver again. After hole #14 the team match was over.Sam birdied #15, and both Sam and Mike missed easy birdie opportunities on #16. Karl, true to his word, kept his driver in his bag for the remaining holes and was still to go on to a 3 stoke victory over LT. . The scores were better all around on the back 9.

Catching Up

Wow!! It's time to try to catch up on TFF. Three Friday's ago, Sam and Karl were in Panama.(earning extra points in The Provisional Mulligan Cup race) Meanwhile, Mike, LT, and Ron went to Falcon Ridge. Ron and LT agreed to play Karl and Mike in an official team match with Karl getting a bogie on every hole. The match was off to a slow start as Ron had to go back to both #1 and #2 to hit provisional mulligans, only to find both balls. Ron had the only birdie of the day on #4, which helped put his team up 2 points. All 3 played a respectable front side: M-39, LT-42, R-43. However, the back 9 wasn't so pretty. Poor sportsmanship was displayed by Mike on #11 as he yelled for Ron's mulligan to GO! GO!, and it did, rolling into the water.This proved to be the turning point of the match, as team K/M picked up 2 points and never trailed again. Despite missing a 4 footer for birdie on #12, Mike still picked up 2 more points. Although LT/R got back to within 2 points, Karl earned player of the day with his bogie on #16. Both R and M double bogied and LT had a triple. Mike won 2 dinners from Ron to go up 1, and Karl having his best round of the year, is up one on LT.

There was no play the next week due to the weather. However, for only the 2nd time this year, all 5 got to play at Jones Creek last Friday. The front 9 was tough on all 5 players, but especially LT as he recorded 3 triple bogies. Ron hit a great shot from 200 yards out to within 6 feet on #2. After a terrible start, LT came to life on the back. He parred #10 then hit the putt of the year, a 59.5 footer on #11 for birdie. On #15, Mike once again chipped in for birdie. Both Mike and LT birdied #16 and after trailing Karl by 8(counting the 2 strokes LT had to give) LT pulled to within 3 strokes of Karl. However, in the end Karl with a K had the day of his dreams. With a par on #17, he went on to beat LT, Ron, and K/M defeated LT/R, so in total that was a 3 dinner day for Karl!

Ready To Come Home

Sorry about that last post but I'm having trouble with this Spanish keyboard. Anyway, as I started to say, the weather would be great here in Panama today to play. Sam and I hope that it's raining up there. The trip to Jaque was great and we have returned to Panama City. In about an hour we will be site seeing, including a trip to monkey island. Sam and I were able to tee it up at the prestiges Jaque Golf and Country Club. I hope to post some pictures in the future of us teeing off on #1. It is ranked as the most difficult hole in all of the Darien. I haven't heard the official results from last week, but I understand it was the best golf that I played all year! This is the last Friday of March and TFF has only play together once this year. We hope to be back to Memphis around 3 tommorow. Please pray for everyone to have a safe trip. LT, tell Jill that several of the men prayed for her brothers every night in a room before going to our tents. Also, many made a special trip to the beach late one afternoon where Larry Chambers lead a beautiful prayer asking for God to heal them. Hope to see everyone Sunday!

Adios Mis Amigos Del Golf

Mientras Sam yviaje de Karlos(with a K) a Panama, dejaran a los tres amigos para jugar para las proximas dos semanas. Who am I kidding? My Spanish is actually limited to:abra la boca(open your mouth) and escupa(spit).Sam and I will enjoy the break from the pressure of competing with The Friday Fivesome for the next two weeks. Hopefully LT will return from the IR and we will continue to pray for Norma. Please keep good records for rankings, shot's of the year, etc. By the way, mission work is worth 500 points per day of mission toward The Provisional Mulligan Cup. Due to Sam being in Panama longer than Karl, he will be the early favorite to be #1 in the next rankings. As requested by Mike, he is to give Ron ocho strokes this week.

Down goes Wylie! Down Goes Wylie! Down Goes Wylie!

As he walked off the 18th green, Mike, sounded like Howard Cosell describing the Frazier/Forman fight of years gone bye: "down goes Wylie!" he kept yelling. "I'm just telling it like it is", Mike said in his attempt to imitate Cosell. Indeed, Mike was dominating in the best front nine in memory of TFF play, making the turn at 2 under par. By the 16th hole, Sam did appear to be a little punch drunk as he took a nine, and the end of his undefeated season was only a matter of a couple of holes away.Once again, LT remained on the IR and without his trophy, as the other 4 headed east to Falcon Ridge. From the start, it appeared to be a Warren/Short match. Both parred #1, and on #2, Karl had the shot of the day: from 158 yards out he went over the trees landing 3 feet from the hole for an easy birdie. However, Mike nailed a 10 footer for birdie and a 3 stroke lead on Sam. Karl was asked about the possibility of beating his partner before they teed it up on #3. "Obviously, I'm in the zone, if I can just keep this up, at a minimal I'll shot 9 under; but that's being conservative. I don't think Mike can keep up with that." Karl preceded to take a 7 on the par 3-3rd hole. As Mike continued to par holes, the frustration began to mount for Sam. He tried to intimidate his opponent on the par 5, #5 with the drive of the year, a 387 yarder(wind aided but no cart path). However, Sam was only able to par and in fact had his 1st round without a birdie all year. Ron had a nice 13 foot par putt on #7 to remain only 1 behind Karl.(even with the stroke Karl had to give) The killer for Sam occurred on #8 where he had an excellent birdie opportunity only to watch Mike putt in a 27 footer for birdie from off the green. Karl had 1 of his many 3 putts of the day on #8 and Ron picked up a stroke. #9 proved to be costly for Karl as he 3 putted for a double and Ron picked up 3 as he birdied with a 21 footer from the fringe. TFF blogspot editor would like to take this opportunity to make the following announcement:" TFF will no longer keep statistics, nor report club tosses as this statistic is clearly interfering with what we term "natural responses to the game." As an example it was clear that Karl desired to toss his 8 iron 50-60 yards on #9 but knowing that TFF reporters would record it for all to read he gently dropped the club instead.(TFF estimated the gentle drop to have covered 37 yards.)It is our hope that the readers of this blog will understand the need to let the emotions of TFF players naturally be released without fear of documentation."Now back to the match! With the hopes of an under par round in his thoughts, Mike took a triple bogie 7 on #10.However, Sam was only able to pick up 1 with a 6.Sam picked up 1 more on 15 to close into within 3 of keeping his undefeated season alive.Then came #16 where Sam's previously recorded quadruple bogie occurred.All matches were pretty much over at this point. Mike beat Ron by 12, and Ron beat Karl by 2. Mike will give Ron 8 strokes next time and Ron and Karl will play even. Karl bought Ron's lunch at Hardees and everyone is "all square" on lunches.

A Classic Warren/Darby Match

In what initially looked like a rain out,turned into one of the most comfortable playing conditions of the year. However, as the skies cleared and the temperature remained in the upper 50's, the wind played havoc all day. Sam, Ron, and Karl with a K traveled the short distance to Jones Creek for the first TFF match played since the course reopened. LT was still on the injured reserve with hopes of returning soon. Mike felt his best chance of moving up in the rankings was not to play so he was a no show. Overall the course seemed to be in fair condition, and hopefully will improve as the summer approaches. Unfortunately, there appeared to only be 2 or 3 other groups that played all day at the bargain rate of $20.The greens were very slick but overall puttable. In fact,there were several mid-distance putts made, as well as several 3 putts. Sam hit a 17footer and Karl an 8 footer on #1, both for pars. Karl had to give Ron 1 stroke and after Ron's bogey, they were all square in what would turn into an epic match. All 3 parred #2, including a 12 foot putt by Ron. Sam saved another par on #6 with a 12 foot putt. It was on #8 that the top 2 shots of the day occurred. The shot of the day was Sam's tee shot. Into at least a 25mph headwind, Sam hit his 3 iron as good as he could, 168 yards to within 2 feet of the hole for birdie. Karl chipped in from 27 yards for another birdie. At the turn, Karl was bragging that he had only bogied 1 hole(unfortunately, he had 1 triple and 3 doubles as well). After 9, Ron and Karl are all square. S-39,K-45,R-46. Ron went up 1 on #10 with a par. Karl answered with par putts of 10 feet and 11 feet on #11,12 to go up 1 himself. Sam hit another great 3 iron to 5feet on the tough #14 par 3 but missed the putt for birdie. Karl had a good drive a little long,but 4 putted, Ron doubled also and after 14 Karl was still up 1. Sam made up for his missed birdie opportunity on 14 with an 8 foot birdie on 15. Karl's 2nd shot was knocked straight down by a tree on 16 and he bogied. Ron parred so we're all square going into 17. Ron's 3 putt bogie on 17 cost him a chace to take the lead. This set up a classic Warren/Darby finish. Amazingly, both hit good drives. Ron was out and when his miss hit 8 iron fell 21 yards short, the door was wide open for Karl. What do you think he did? Oh ye of little faith! He nailed a pitching wedge 3.5 feet from the pin, leaving himself an easy uphill putt. With the match all but over, what do you think Ron did? Well you're right, but not like you might have imagined. Ron's 3rd shot was clearly hit too hard and destined to roll off the green. However, it landed in a sand pile on the green and stopped 4 feet above the hole. Ron faced a very slick downhill breaker for a remarkable par. What do you think he did? Right! He nailed it. Unfortunately for Ron, Karl's putter had been hot all day. He calmly stepped up to the tap in and......... Well you guess what he did.... That's right, he left it 1 inch to the right. So Karl and Ron tie. Karl will have to give Ron 1 stroke again next match.

Last Trip To Chickasaw?

With The Bear Trace at Chickasaw sadly scheduled to close, this may have been TFF last chance to play the course. What would be your favorite memory of TFF playing at Chickasaw? For some it was the time Karl got two clubs stuck in the same tree on #7. After an errant 60 degree shot, Karl threw the club into a nearby white oak . Several tosses later in attempt to knock it out, Karl had his second club stuck. Soon he had other golfers stopping to give advice on retrieving the clubs. About 10 minuets later, Karl had both clubs back and another TFF memory. Because the course is on state park property, it can't be sold, only leased. Why? In economic times like these, why not make an exception? Sell the course to private investors. The state evidently made a mistake using tax payers money building the course. Why not turn it into a big gain for the state? The state didn't have to buy the land, only build the course, clubhouse, and purchase equipment to operate the course. If the state were to sell the course in it's entirety, there should be a return of a few million dollars. Otherwise, the course will grow over and be lost. The state park would only lose a very small percentage of acreage. Wow! Is TFF going political?
Back to a more important subject, Friday's match. Present for the day were all but one, LT. LT was forced to go on the injured reserve after an apparent shoulder injury. The alleged shoulder injury is said to have occurred while throwing his former attorney, Adam, out of The Old Country Store's Ice Cream Fountain. "Once the president pardoned Karl, I had no use for Adam. He was eating us into bankruptcy. When I offered Adam free ice cream for life, I didn't take into consideration a previous encounter that I had with his sister. Because of Ashley, we had to take crab legs off the all you can eat buffet." Anyway, the injury has apparently aided LT as after today's play, he has vaulted into this week's #1 ranking. Ron got the day off to a good start when he muscled a 79 yard drive right down the middle. Mike's response: "It's not long, but it's not wrong." Sam had a nice 160 yard shot from a fairway bunker on #3 for an easy par. He followed that with the shot of the day on #4. His 104 yard wedge apparently lipped the cup stopping 18 inches from the cup for a birdie. On #6 Sam hit a 16.5 foot putt for his 2nd birdie. Also on #6 Ron put his pink ball (PB) into play and his game seemed to come to life. Karl had a nice lost ball par on#9 and at the turn: Sam:38, Mike:40, Karl:44,Ron:47. Mike had to give Ron 8 so he is down just 1. Karl and Ron are playing even so Karl's up 3. The back 9 could pretty much go without any comment. Mike nailed the putt of the day on #14, a 27 foot par, and followed that up with his first club toss of the year on #15. After hooking his drive, the former self proclaimed undefeated club tossing champ, launched an embarrassing 10.5 footer. After 15 holes Ron is up 2 on Mike and only down 1 to Karl. However, he also lost his PB and his confidence looked shaken. When Karl birdied #16 and parred#17 it was over. Mike, however, finished bogey; bogey and Ron went on to win by 1.

Again, we would like to thank President Obama for the down payment on the bail out. We would request the government's assistance in securing The Provisional Mulligan Trophy back. After being sold on EBay by Karl, it's location is unknown. "We must get this priceless trophy back and into the hand's of LT," said Karl. As for Ron and posting; maybe the best idea would be to have him hire someone to post for him.

Obama Bails Out TFF, Gives Presidential Pardon To Karl

"I can think of no better place, no better time, or in any better way to get America back on its' feet than to bail out TFF. We are a country that was built on the principle of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is not just the privilege of a select few, but the constitutional right of every American to be able to read TFF!" So were the words of President Obama as he stepped off Air force1 this mourning in Jackson, Tn. to personally deliver the 1st economic stimulus check to the CEO of TFF Karl. Not only did Karl recieve a check for 1 billion dollars but also a full presidential pardon from Obama. "I at this time grant Karl a full pardon in all current lawsuits against him as well as any against TFF." In hopes of playing with TFF today, the president was dressed in his golf attire as well as standing by his golf bag. Karl, seeming somewhat in a rush, thanked the president for the check and quickly left. As he was departing he made this statement to the press: "This check will help, but we both need an deserve more!" Imagine the nerve of that guy thinking he could buy his way onto the links with us! Now I've got to run, we're teeing it up in Chickasaw in about an hour."

THE LAST POST : TFF To Be Shut Down

After over 1.5 months of operation, TFF blog is being shut down. Even as this post is being written, IRS agents are in the process of taking over all TFF assets. This popular Blog site is believed to have had over 4 readers in its' heyday. However, after TFF fired blog administrator Ashley, the readership has dropped off dramatically. "It was a case of we couldn't afford to keep her, but we couldn't afford to let her go " said CEO Karl. Lack of readers, however, may have been the least of problems for TFF. There are currently at least 7 known lawsuits filed against Karl:
1. LT v. Karl (you've read about this case)
2. The Lovely Dianne(H.L.) v. Karl (slander among other allegations)
3. Ron (the tongue) v. Karl (Ron's case is being supported by TDA(Tongue Disorders Anonymous)
4. Mike v. Karl (custody of his old irons)
5. Sam v. Karl( cruel and unusual punishment in regards to having to watch Karl's golf game all these years)
6. Ashley v. Karl (mental anguish from being fired)
7. Karl v. Karl ( that he should have won player of the year)

We caught up with the prosecuting attorney of the 1st 6 trials at The Old Country Store Ice Cream Fountain where he has been seen hanging out several hours each day. "I never thought Adam looked much like his dad until recently", said LT. "However, after 4 days of constantly eating all of our ice cream, he's starting to look like the 13 year old Karl we saw in the video." Adam was able to back away from the counter long enough to say:"We'll easily win all 6. Hey! how about another scoop of that rocky road!!" Meanwhile Karl was being handcuffed and escorted from TFF headquarters. "It's been a great ride, I've enjoyed all the perks of being a CEO and my only regret is selling The Provisional Mulligan Trophy on EBay. I'll be back. I'm confident that the president will bail TFF out , all allegations will be dropped, and we will be back where we belong."

Now that the criminal accusations against my client have been dropped, we now bring action against TFF in state civil court for Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress.

4 elements of a successful IIED claim
1. Defendant acted intentionally or recklessly
- The intent of the act need not be to bring about emotional distress. A reckless disregard for the likelihood of causing emotional distress is sufficient.

Upon further review of the facts of the case, it has been determined that Karl Warren was in fact playing a "joke" or "prank" upon my client. Under Tennessee case law, even an act in good faith such as a "joke" or "prank" the actor can be held liable for the reckless disregard for those the "joke" or "prank" is upon.

2. Defendant’s conduct was extreme and outrageous
-Some general factors that will persuade that the conduct was extreme and outrageous:
(1) there was a pattern of conduct, not just an isolated incident;
- Research has shown that Karl Warren has a extensive record of previous pranks and disregard for ones feelings.
(2) the plaintiff was vulnerable and the defendant knew it;
- It is well known that my client is very trusting and believes that humans are naturally good beings, and would not want to intentionally inflict emotional distress upon others by jokes such as this.
(3) the defendant was in a position of power;
- Karl Warren is the president, and creator of the Friday Fivesome and is looked up to by all members.
4) racial epithets were used; and
- My client has numerously been referred to as the “Godfather” due to his Italian appearance. Racial references to his Italian appearance have even been posted on the Friday Fivesome’s website.

3. Defendant’s act is the cause of the distress
-The actions of the defendant must have actually caused the plaintiff's emotional distress.
- The joke was the direct cause of my clients emotional distress.

4. Plaintiff suffers severe emotional distress as a result of defendant’s conduct.
-The emotional distress suffered by the plaintiffs must be "severe." This standard is quantified by the intensity, duration, and any physical manifestations of the distress.
An example of an act which might form the basis for a claim of intentional infliction of emotional distress would be sending a letter to an individual falsely informing the person that a close family member had been killed in an accident.
- If the courts have found IIED in the above instance, our case is a lock because the falsely taking away of the prestigious Friday Fivesome championship trophy is a far more greater offence than the loss of a family member.

If no response is given within 14 days, default judgment will be entered by the court for my client, and damages will be awarded. Damages shall include swiping Karl Warren of his Presidential position over the Friday Fivesome, and 40 hours of community service.

Ron's Revenge

After last week's embarrassment,Ron brought his game to this week's match that was again played at Falcon Ridge.. Mike appealed his 1 week suspension and was allowed to play. LT refused to play with Mike back, so there were only 4. After only a few swings, the other 3 realized that something was different about Ron. When questioned, Ron admitted that he had been practicing. Karl immediately protested the match, claiming that practicing was in violation of league rules. However, a quick call to the commissioner proved that practicing was indeed legal. Ron had the shot of the day on #4 where he almost holed out from 73 yards and tapped in for his 1st birdie of the year. Then on #7 Ron hit a 18 foot 7 inch putt for his second birdie. At the turn Sam:36(he also birdied #4.) Ron:38(12 strokes better than last week) Mike:41 Karl:43. When Ron hit a 21 foot par putt uphill on # 13, it was all but over for Mike and Karl. Ron went on to post an 83, 17 strokes better than last week. If he can keep improving at this pace, in only 2 more rounds, he should shoot a 49. Ron won a lunch from both Mike and Karl. Overall there was not much to report. Karl took a 9 on #15 after taking 5 shots to get out of the woods, finishing 11 over on the last 4 holes.

A Changed Man?

With all the negative press as of late that Mike has gotten, TFF blogspot decided to attempt to do a positive article that shows the good side of Mike. As most readers are aware, Mike once had a temper of legandary perpotions.So we arranged an interview with his lovely wife Dianne, to see what it was like to live with such a changed man. However, wnen we arrived at Mike's office, the staff informed us that Dianne was at the ER with a broken nose. They refused to offer any farther information other than Dr. Mike was not happy about the interview.


PS: Dianne really is at the ER with an apparent broken nose from a fall at the office. Please keep her in your prayers.
